The Portland, Ore.-based ice cream concept, which counts Danny Meyer among its investors, made it on this ranking despite what company founder Kimberly Malek called "a hard year." System sales rose 12% and have averaged 30% growth over the past three years.
The chain was created in part as a gathering spot for people to enjoy ice cream--people have met future spouses while standing in line for ice cream. More recently, Salt & Straw has developed a strong digital game with an online shop and a "Pints Club" where customers can get five seasonal pints of ice cream delivered to their door every month.
