As a fledgling artist mired in realism, I’m very much attracted to Janine’s realism inspired abstraction. I live on the coast as well, and I love the way Janine uses her marks to depict the beach grasses wildly waving in the strong coastal winds. I am very attracted to her paintings ‘Squall II’ and “Across Loch Linnhe”. I like the cut-out feel to the different terrains.

Many thanks for your question Barbara and I’m glad you like the work! At the heart of it is really gestural movement so to achieve this you need to find your own individual visual language. A good way to get loose is to make lots of fast drawings, each no more than 1 minute long, to capture the essence of your subject matter. Keep your layers thin. Erasure is an integral part of the process too, and I use it at every stage of development – far from being a destructive act it can bring an interesting element to the work. Hope that gives you some starting points, have fun!

I love these guest blogs, both to see new work and to hear how the artist views the process. You don’t get that often. It is a very generous thing you do to share your space with others –it helps build an art community. A good addition to posts on your own work. Brava.
